Behind 'Atmospheres'

Studio Notes

Our lives are built upon snapshots of the past—fragments of yesterday we seek to treasure so that, when we revisit them, we can still feel like participants in that story. But what happens when the mind loses its memories in a way that feels almost deliberate? How can one explain the feeling of something never experienced—something born merely of a vivid imagination weaving tales detached from reality, all to rewrite one’s own history? I often find myself in blank spaces and scenes far removed from my reality—places where I am not myself, where I am not living my own story, and where I do not inhabit my own body. There is a certain comfort in the idea of being someone else. The stories I used to tell myself as a child offered a distraction from an existence that felt empty, painful, or simply incomprehensible. Thus, imaginary tales and deep reverie became my best way of coping with life's difficulties. ‘Atmospheres’ is my latest series of oil paintings, rendered in monochrome—like images of a cherished past. They represent spaces I wish I had inhabited, a face I wish I had possessed, or a decision I wish I had had the courage to make. I want to believe that I live within these images: brave enough to move forward, strong enough to find inner calm, and free enough to make choices without fear. This new and final series represents: Nostalgia for what never happened. Pride in the person I never was. Spaces where I never belonged.
